The Bear Who Caught Lightning

Emma climbed the grassy hill behind her grandmother's cottage every evening. She loved watching the sunset paint the sky in pink and orange. But tonight, something magical happened.

A giant bear with fur like storm clouds appeared on the hilltop. He stood on his hind legs, stretching his massive paws toward the darkening sky.

"What are you doing?" Emma called out, forgetting to be afraid.

The bear turned his kind face toward her. "I'm catching lightning bolts," he said in a voice like distant thunder. "When lightning strikes the ground at exactly the right moment, it creates magic crystals. These are nature's special vitamins."

Emma's eyes grew wide. "Magic vitamins?"

The bear nodded solemnly. "Not like the ones in bottles. These are courage crystals, kindness gems, and hope stones. They grow where lightning meets the earth."

Suddenly, a bolt of lightning flashed! The bear's paws moved incredibly fast, catching the glowing spark before it hit the ground. The bolt turned into a tiny blue crystal that hummed with energy.

"This one," the bear said, "is for the child who needs to be brave tomorrow."

Emma thought about her spelling test at school. She'd been so worried. "Could... could I have it?"

The bear smiled and placed the crystal in her palm. It warmed her hand like sunshine. "But remember," he said, "magic vitamins only work if you believe in yourself. The crystal is just a reminder. The real power has been inside you all along."

Emma closed her hand around the glowing stone. She felt a tingle of courage spread through her.

"Thank you, Lightning Bear," she whispered.

"Come back whenever you need," the bear said, already reaching for another spark. "The sky has plenty of magic for everyone."

That night, Emma dreamed of spelling words that glowed like lightning. The next morning, she aced her test. But the best part? She realized the bear was right — she'd had the courage all along. The crystal had just helped her see it.

Now, every time she climbs her hill, Emma waves to the bear, and sometimes, just sometimes, he catches a lightning bolt and tosses her a wink.
