The Bear Who Caught Lightning
Mittens was a small orange cat with big dreams. Every summer afternoon, she perched on the old wooden fence watching the village children play baseball in the meadow. How she wished she could join their game!
One day, a enormous brown bear named Barnaby shuffled out of the forest. The children screamed and ran away—all except Mittens. She sensed something gentle about the giant creature.
"Hello," Mittens meowed bravely. "Would you like to play baseball?"
Barnaby's eyes widened. "I've always wanted to, but I'm too big and clumsy. Look at these paws!" He held up enormous furry hands. "I'd probably break something."
Mittens scampered to the equipment bag and dragged out a baseball. "We'll play our own game—just you and me."
As Barnaby tossed the ball, thunder rumbled overhead. Storm clouds gathered faster than Mittens had ever seen. Then—CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the center of the meadow.
But it didn't burn. Instead, the lightning wove itself into a glowing, crackling baseball diamond that shimmered with silver light.
"Whoa," Barnaby breathed.
Mittens grinned. "Your turn to bat!"
Barnaby picked up the tiny bat between two massive claws. Mittens wound up and threw the ball. It sailed through the air—until the summoned lightning BALL crackled through the sky, merging with their game.
Barnaby swung with all his might. CRACK! The ball flew higher and higher, caught by another lightning bolt that carried it into the clouds. The storm answered with a delighted rumble.
They played until the magical diamond faded, leaving only stars twinkling above.
"You're not too big," Mittens said as they walked home. "You're exactly the right size for extraordinary things."
Barnaby smiled, his heart full. And sometimes, on stormy summer nights, villagers said they could still see a cat and bear playing baseball under the lightning's glow—a reminder that friendship makes anything possible.
