The Bear Who Caught Lightning

Emma loved her old stuffed bear, Barnaby, more than anything in the world. He had missing button eyes and a floppy ear, but he was her best friend. Every night, she whispered her secrets to him before bed.

One summer evening, as thunder rumbled outside, Emma noticed something strange. Barnaby's remaining button eye began to glow softly like a tiny star. Then—he winked!

"Emma!" Barnaby said, his voice fuzzy and warm like fresh cookies. "The sky baseball game is starting! We have to go!"

Emma gasped as Barnaby hopped off her bed. He grabbed her hand, and suddenly they were rising through the ceiling, held up by an invisible cable made of moonlight. Higher and higher they floated until they poked through the clouds.

Above them, magical bears played baseball with balls of pure lightning. Crash! Zap! The lightning balls flashed like fireworks whenever they were hit.

"Want to play?" Barnaby asked, handing her a glowing baseball bat made from a rainbow.

Emma stepped up to the plate. A lightning ball zipped toward her. She swung—CRACK! The ball sailed through the clouds, leaving a trail of sparkles that turned into real stars twinkling in the night sky.

"You did it!" Barnaby cheered, hugging her with soft, fuzzy arms. "Every time someone hits a lightning ball, a new star is born. That's why there are so many stars—kids like you have been playing cloud baseball forever!"

The cloud bears cheered, and their captain gave Emma a tiny lightning ball on a silver chain. "Keep this," he rumbled kindly. "Whenever you feel afraid, remember: you have the power to create light in the darkness."

Emma and Barnaby rode the moonlight cable back home, tucking themselves into bed just as the sun began to peek through her window.

"Was that real?" Emma whispered.

Barnaby winked his button eye. "Real magic is the strongest kind—the kind you believe in."

Emma touched her new lightning necklace and smiled. Some adventures were too wonderful to forget, and the best friends could be found in the most unexpected places.
