The Bear Who Caught Lightning
Lily loved exploring behind her grandmother's old cottage. One rainy afternoon, she found something strange half-buried in the mud—a thick black cable that seemed to stretch endlessly into the woods. Curious, she followed it through the dripping trees until she reached a secret clearing she'd never seen before.
In the center sparkled a crystal pool, its surface smooth as glass despite the storm. The mysterious cable disappeared right into the water! Lily knelt to peer closer when suddenly—CRACK!—a bolt of lightning split the sky.
But this lightning didn't hit the ground. It arced straight toward the pool, following that cable like a glowing finger! The water lit up with brilliant blue light, and out popped the most enormous brown bear Lily had ever seen, shaking sparkling droplets from his fur.
"You're late!" the bear rumbled kindly. "I've been waiting for someone to help me catch the star-fire."
Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"Of course! I'm Barnaby, Keeper of the Storm Pool. Every thunderstorm, lightning charges this water with magic. But someone needs to help me collect it before it fades away!" He held out a giant paw. "Care to join me?"
Lily's fear vanished. She took his paw, and together they danced around the pool as lightning struck again and again. Each splash filled glass jars that Barnaby kept hidden behind rocks—glowing, humming with energy.
"What's it for?" Lily asked as the storm passed.
Barnaby smiled. "Tonight, watch your cottage."
That night, Lily peeked through her window. The tiny lights from the jars strung around her home like magical fireflies, making everything glow softly. Her grandmother's old house looked enchanted.
Barnaby appeared at the window, winked, and vanished into the night.
Lily learned that day that magic hides everywhere—even in mud, in storms, in unexpected friendships. Some bears don't want honey. Some want to share the wonder of star-fire with a friend.
