The Bear Who Came for Breakfast
Ruby had the wildest hair in the whole second grade. Every morning, it burst out in ten different directions, like a brown fireworks display that never settled down.
Your hair has a mind of its own, her mama said, trying to smooth it down with a brush.
But Ruby didnt mind. She liked that her hair was unpredictable—just like her best friend, Barnaby the stuffed bear, who sat on her pillow every night.
One Tuesday morning, Ruby woke up to something surprising. Barnaby was sitting at the edge of her bed, holding something shiny.
Time for our running adventure! said Barnaby.
Ruby rubbed her eyes. But youre a stuffed bear!
Not today, grinned Barnaby. Today Im your running friend. And look—holding up the shiny object—I found a courage vitamin!
Ruby giggled. Thats just a button!
Barnaby winked. In the magic morning light, everything can be a vitamin if you believe. Today, this button is a bravery vitamin. And he popped it into Rupys palm like it was the most precious thing in the world.
Together they crept downstairs and out into the garden, their feet making soft running steps on the dewy grass. The sun painted everything gold. Barnaby explained that each running lap would fill them with different kinds of magic—kindness for the butterflies, curiosity for the squirrels, courage for scary things like school presentations.
They ran until they were breathless and happy, Rupys wild hair streaming behind her like a friendly cloud. By the time they collapsed on the grass, Ruby didnt feel nervous about her presentation anymore.
I ran with a bear! she laughed.
You ran with a friend, said Barnaby, squeezing her fuzzy paw. And thats the best vitamin of all.
That day at school, Ruby gave her presentation with her messy hair flying every which way. She didnt try to tame it. She didnt need to. Because she knew something wonderful: sometimes the most unpredictable things—wild hair, stuffed bears who come alive, running adventures in your pajamas—are exactly what make you brave.
And every morning after that, Ruby and Barnaby had their running vitamin together. Because the best kind of magic, they discovered, was the friendship that made every morning an adventure.
