The Bear Who Befriended the Sphinx

Lily's favorite stuffed bear, Thunder, sat on her windowsill every night. He was special because his left ear was shaped exactly like a tiny lightning bolt—a funny coincidence, or so she thought.

One stormy evening, while lightning flashed across the sky, Thunder twitched his nose. Then his paw moved. Then he shook his fuzzy brown head.

"Lily!" whispered the bear. "The lightning has woke me up! There's someone very lonely who needs our help."

Lily rubbed her eyes. "You're talking?"

"Only during lightning storms!" Thunder explained. "There's a Sphinx in the old library museum, and she's forgotten how to smile. She's been grumpy for three hundred years!"

Thunder took Lily's hand, and together they followed the lightning bolts through the magic they create in storm clouds. They tumbled right into the museum, where a stone Sphinx sat alone in a dusty gallery.

The Sphinx had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. She looked terribly sad.

"No one ever visits," the Sphinx sighed. "They only come to stare at my riddles, then leave. I just want a friend."

Lily's heart melted. "I'll be your friend! And this is Thunder Bear."

The Sphinx's stone eyes sparkled. "A friend? Truly?"

Thunder nodded. "We could play games! I know a good one—what's brown, fuzzy, and has an ear shaped like lightning?"

"A BEAR!" the Sphinx guessed, and for the first time in centuries, she smiled. Her stone face softened, and the museum seemed to brighten.

They played riddles until the storm passed. Lily learned that everyone—even ancient stone creatures—just wants to be seen and loved. And Thunder? He learned that his lightning-shaped ear wasn't a funny mistake at all. It was exactly what made him perfect.

Now every lightning storm, Lily and Thunder visit the Sphinx. Because the best magic of all isn't lightning or ancient spells. It's friendship.
