The Bear Who Asked the Sphinx

Barnaby was a small brown bear with very big dreams. While other bears slept through the winter, Barnaby stayed awake, staring at the stars and wondering about the world.

One night, he saw something amazing — a golden sphinx sitting on a moonbeam, right outside his cave! The sphinx had the body of a lion and the head of a kind old woman with twinkling eyes.

"Hello, little bear," the sphinx said. "I am Stella, Guardian of Wishes. But I'm stuck! My moonbeam cable has snapped, and I can't return to the sky."

Barnaby's heart went pitter-pat. "I can help! But how?"

Stella smiled. "First, you must answer my riddle: What has golden scales but cannot swim, holds memories but cannot speak, and grows smaller when you share it?"

Barnaby thought and thought. He paced around his cave, but the answer wouldn't come.

Then he noticed his friend Glimmer, a tiny goldfish in a bowl by his bed. Glimmer had been his companion since he was a baby bear. She swam to the surface and blew bubbles.

"Bubbles!" Barnaby shouted. "No, that's not it..." He sat down sadly.

Glimmer swam to the glass and looked at him with her wise fish eyes. Barnaby suddenly remembered how she made him happy every day, just by being there.

"Friendship!" Barnaby cried. "Friendship has golden moments but cannot swim in water alone. It holds memories but never speaks of them. And it grows BIGGER when you share it!"

Stella clapped her paws together. "Correct! And now, for my second riddle..."

But Barnaby interrupted. "Wait! I already know the answer to the second riddle. The answer is HELPING. Because when we help others, we lift ourselves up too!"

Stella's eyes shone bright as stars. "You are wise, little bear. Take this." She handed him a spool of moonlight cable. "Tie it to my moonbeam, and I'll be free."

Barnaby climbed the tallest tree, carefully tied the cable, and watched Stella rise into the night sky, trailing sparkles behind her.

"Thank you, Barnaby!" she called. "Remember: true magic happens when a brave heart meets a kind deed."

That night, Barnaby slept better than any bear in history. And sometimes, if you look up at the moon, you might still see Stella watching over all the kind bears who ask good questions and help their friends — even the small, swimming ones in glass bowls.
