The Bear Truth

Maya's crush invited her to a 'chill hang' with his squad, and she'd spent two hours curating the perfect aesthetic. Casual but intentional. Effortless but not too effortless. The cable-knit sweater she'd thrifted specifically for tonight was giving artsy mysterious girl vibes, or at least that's what her TikTok feed claimed.

When she walked into the rec room, five people were already sprawled across beanbags, passing around what looked suspiciously like—no way. A bear cub. An actual bear cub, wearing a tiny dog collar and gnawing on someone's homework.

"His name's Cat," said Jake, the gorgeous junior whose infectious laugh had haunted Maya's daydreams for three months. "Long story involving my aunt's wildlife sanctuary and a very confused cat lady."

The bear—Cat—chose that exact moment to discover Maya's vintage tote bag and dumped its contents onto the floor. Out spilled her emergency granola bars, a slightly bent paperback, and her phone, which lit up with a text from her mom: "Don't forget to walk the dog before midnight!"

Jake's eyebrows shot up. "You have a dog too? What's its name? Bear?"

Maya felt her face burning. This was it. The moment her carefully constructed cool-girl persona disintegrated like wet tissue paper. She could lie, claim some hipster dog name like Bowie or Luna. But the bear was now chewing on her hair clip with unnerving focus, and honestly, what did she have to lose?

"His name's Mr. Fluffington," she admitted. "He's a poodle mix with anxiety and he wears little sweaters when it rains. I'm not even embarrassed anymore."

"That's lowkey iconic," someone said, and suddenly everyone was laughing WITH her instead of AT her, and Jake was asking about Mr. Fluffington's sweater collection, and the bear had fallen asleep on her vintage sweater, and somehow this wasn't a disaster after all.

Later, as Maya helped Jake clean up shredded homework, he said, "You know, I've been wanting to text you for weeks but I was overthinking it. Then you just walked in here owning the Mr. Fluffington energy, and I was like—damn."

She took the cable-knit sweater back, now covered in bear fur, and decided she liked it better this way. Messy, authentic, and surprisingly perfect.
