The Bear, The Dog, and The Pool
Tyler's chest Hair. The kind you only see on movies.
"No cap, that dude's a straight-up bear," Marcus whispered, elbowing me.
I followed his gaze. The new kid—what was his name? Bruno?—stood at the edge of the pool, his shoulders practically blocking the sun. A legit bear. Tall, broad, and rocking swim trunks that showed off way too much leg hair for a sophomore.
The backyard pool party was already low-key stressful. Sarah Chen was there, looking annoyingly perfect in her bikini while sipping sparkling water. I'd been psyching myself up to talk to her for weeks, and now my brain was doing that thing where it conveniently forgot every word in the English language.
"You gonna talk to her, or just stand there looking like you're contemplating life's deepest mysteries?" Marcus teased.
"Shut up. I'm working up to it."
Then Mrs. Henderson's golden retriever, Buster, came barreling out of nowhere. That dog was already legendary for three separate incidents involving food, furniture, and a very expensive vase. Someone must've left the gate open.
Buster spotted Bruno. His eyes got that scary focused look dogs get right before they do something unhinged.
"Oh hey boy, who's a—" Bruno started, reaching out.
Buster launched himself at Bruno with zero hesitation, knocking him backward. Straight into the pool.
The splash was massive. Like, *tsunami* massive. Water sloshed over the deck, soaking half the partygoers—including Sarah Chen.
Bruno surfaced, spluttering, while Buster stood on the pool edge looking ridiculously pleased with himself, tail wagging like he'd just accomplished something noble.
"My bad!" Bruno called out, wiping water from his eyes. "I think that's the most excitement I've had since moving here."
Sarah Chen laughed, and I swear my heart did something stupid and fluttery.
"That was legendary," I said, stepping toward them. "I'm Tyler, by the way."
"Bruno. Sorry about your... everything."
"Eh," I shrugged. "Needed to cool off anyway."
Marcus rolled his eyes so hard I practically heard them from there.
Sometimes the best moments aren't the ones you plan. Sometimes they're just a bear falling into a pool, because a dog decided today was the day for chaos. And sometimes, just sometimes, that chaos breaks the ice better than any rehearsed pickup line ever could.
