The Bear That Roared

I never thought I'd be the kid in the bear costume, yet here I was—stuffed inside what smelled like a middle school locker room, sweating through my orangeundertshirt while Miller High's actual **bull** mascot paced ten feet away.

"What are you waiting for, **bear**?" yelled Tyler, our school's quarterback, currently wearing the **cable** knit sweater his mom definitely made him. "Go roar at him or something!"

My best friend Maya filmed everything for her TikTok, because of course she was. This was supposed to be easy—just stand there during halftime and wave. But their bull mascot kept charging at me, and the crowd's energy shifted from bored to bloodthirsty real quick.

I thought about backing down. Letting Tyler take over. He'd been roasting my **orange** hair all week, calling me carrot-top and traffic cone in AP Chem. That was Tyler's thing—bullying anyone who didn't fit his polished, athletic mold.

But then I remembered something my dad said: sometimes you have to **bear** the uncomfortable stuff to find out what you're made of.

So I did something stupid. I dropped to all fours and charged at that bull.

The crowd went NUTS. Like, actually lost it.

Their mascot stumbled backward, tripped over his own hooves, and face-planted. I helped him up while everyone screamed. Under the costume? It was this freshman kid I'd seen getting bullied by Tyler last week.

"You okay?" I asked through my bear head.

"Yeah," he said, breathless. "That was... actually sick."

Maya posted the video. It got 200K views overnight. Tyler stopped making fun of my hair. And that freshman? We're working on a project together now—something about standing up to jerks using social media.

Turns out, sometimes the scariest moments aren't the ones we're afraid of. They're the ones where we finally stop caring who's watching and just do something anyway.

Oh, and I got to keep the bear head. It's on my bookshelf now—a reminder that even the quietest people can have the loudest roar when it matters.
