The Bear Suit Summer

Maya's summer as a camp counselor was supposed to be epic—hang with kids, earn bank, maybe meet someone cute. Instead, she was stuck wearing a giant fuzzy bear costume that smelled like every sweaty kid who'd worn it before her.

"You're up, Bear Maya," called Jordan, her co-counselor and the only reason she hadn't quit yet. He had this smile that made her stomach do backflips, which was embarrassing because she was literally seventeen and should be over that by now.

She lumbered toward the dining hall, sweat already dripping down her back inside the polyester suit. Today's special: spinach smoothies because the camp had gone "healthy" and now everything tasted like sadness and leaves.

As she passed the art cabin, something caught her eye—bright orange spray paint on the side of the building. A giant mustache on the camp's beloved founder portrait. Someone was going to be so cooked.

Then she heard it—running footsteps, the slap of sandals against gravel. Two campers darting away, orange paint still wet on their hands.

"HEY!" Maya yelled, but it came out as a muffled roar through the bear head. She took off after them, the suit weighing like fifty pounds, her breath already ragged. Her body was doing that thing where it's like nah, we're done here, but her brain was absolutely not having it.

The campers scrambled toward the woods, still giggling like they weren't about to get busted so hard.

Maya's bear paw slipped on something—orange peels, seriously?—and she went down. Bear suit faceplant into the dirt. The humiliation was absolute.

But when she pushed herself up, Jordan was there, offering a hand, actually laughing but not in a mean way. "You okay, Bear Maya?"

She wanted to disappear into the suit forever. Instead she yanked off the bear head, hair everywhere, face burning. "I think I inhaled a bug."

"You literally just chased down two prank artists in a bear suit," Jordan said, pulling her up. "That's lowkey iconic."

Later, while the campers cleaned the portrait (supervised, obviously), Maya sat on the dock with Jordan, sharing stolen orange sodas and watching the sun set over the lake. The spinach smoothie situation was still tragic, but maybe—just maybe—this summer wasn't going to be so bad after all.
