The Bear's Sunny Orange Friend
Barnaby was a curious young bear with fur the color of autumn leaves. He lived in a cozy cave near an enchanted orange grove where the fruit glowed like tiny suns. Every morning, Barnaby would tiptoe through the morning mist to pick the ripest oranges for his breakfast.
One day, Barnaby heard a slow, dragging sound coming from behind the oldest orange tree. *Shuffle-step. Shuffle-step.* His heart beat faster. The older bears had warned him about the creature who lived in these woods—a zombie who moved slowly and never spoke, only wandering alone through the grove.
Barnaby wanted to run, but his curiosity made him stay. He peered around the tree trunk.
There she was—a small, green figure with mossy hair, moving in slow motion. She reached for an orange, her fingers trembling. Barnaby watched, fascinated instead of afraid.
"Would you like help?" he asked kindly.
The creature looked up, surprised. Her eyes sparkled like dewdrops. "Oh, yes please," she said softly. "I'm Zimmie. Everyone calls me a zombie because I move so slowly. But really, I'm just a magical gardener who takes forever to do things because I stop to appreciate every moment."
Barnaby giggled. "That's not scary at all!"
Together, they picked the perfect orange. Zimmie showed Barnaby how to peel it in one long curl, revealing juicy segments inside. They shared it under the golden leaves, talking and laughing.
"I've been so lonely," Zimmie admitted. "Everyone runs away when they see me coming."
"They just don't know you yet," Barnaby said, handing her the biggest orange slice. "From now on, you'll have a friend. We can pick oranges together every morning."
And so they did. The bear and the so-called zombie became the best of friends, teaching everyone in the forest that sometimes the scariest stories are just waiting for someone brave enough to say hello.
