The Bear's Ocean Call
Lily loved swimming more than anything. Every summer morning, she'd run to the blue lake behind her house, her toes wiggling in the warm sand.
One day, something shiny washed up on the shore. An iphone! But this wasn't like any phone Lily had seen. When she touched it, it glowed with tiny bubbles, and the screen showed a friendly bear face smiling back at her.
"Hello!" said a deep, gentle voice from the phone. "I'm Barnaby! I'm a bear who lives in a magical cave beneath this lake. I've watched you swim every day, and I wish I could swim too. But bears don't like water."
Lily's eyes widened. "I could teach you! My mom says swimming is like floating like a cloud."
"Would you really?" Barnaby asked hope filling his voice.
The next morning, Lily waited by the lake. Suddenly, a large brown bear peeked out from behind a tree. Barnaby! He was even bigger than on the phone's screen, with kind eyes that sparkled like morning dew.
"I brought my iphone so we can still talk when I'm in the water," Lily said, holding up the magical device.
Barnaby dipped one paw in the lake. "It's cold!" he shivered.
"Just think warm thoughts," Lily said, swimming in circles. "Pretend you're floating in honey!"
For weeks, Lily visited the lake. Barnaby grew braver each day, first splashing with one paw, then two, until finally — the big bear was swimming! He paddled like a furry boat, his head bobbing above water, grinning ear to ear.
"I'm doing it!" Barnaby cheered through the magical iphone. "I'm swimming!"
Lily laughed and splashed water at her friend. "You're a natural, Barnaby!"
That summer, they taught each other many things. Barnaby showed Lily the prettiest spots for watching sunsets, and Lily taught the bear how to do cannonballs (though Barnaby called them "bearball splashes").
On the last day of summer, Barnaby gave Lily a shell that shimmered like pearls. "Friends who help each other fly together," he said wisdom in his gentle eyes.
Lily hugged her bear friend tight. "Next summer, we'll learn to dive together!"
As autumn leaves began to fall, Lily kept her magical iphone safe. Every night, Barnaby's voice would come through — "Goodnight, little swimming teacher. Dream of waves."
And Lily did, smiling in her sleep, knowing somewhere, a bear was dreaming of swimming too.
