The Bear's Magical Midnight Friend
Barnaby the bear loved his favorite orange hat more than anything in the forest. It had belonged to his grandfather, and every night he'd take it off and place it carefully on his favorite rock by the stream.
One moonlit night, Barnaby heard a curious sound. *Scuff, scuff, drag.* He peeked through his bushy fur and saw the strangest creature—a lumpy, greenish figure with one arm that drooped and one leg that dragged behind. It shuffled toward his rock and reached out a floppy hand toward his precious orange hat!
"That's a zombie!" gasped Barnaby, remembering the stories the old badger told around the campfire. "Zombies steal hats to put on their zombie heads!"
But then the creature stopped. Instead of taking the hat, it picked up the shiny orange peeling Barnaby had left from his afternoon snack. The zombie held it up to the moonlight and smiled a crooked, gentle smile.
"It's so beautiful," the zombie whispered. "I haven't seen orange since... since I was regular."
Barnaby blinked. This zombie wasn't scary at all. "You like orange?"
"I used to be an artist," said the zombie, whose name was Zed. "I painted sunset pictures. But now my hands don't work well anymore. I just wanted to remember how beautiful colors can be."
Barnaby's heart melted. He picked another perfect orange from the tree and handed it to Zed. "My friend's a photographer," he said. "I bet she could teach you to take pictures instead of paint. Would you like that?"
Zed's eyes widened. "More than anything!"
And that's how the forest learned that zombies aren't always what stories say. Sometimes they're just artists who need new ways to create. Every evening now, you can find Barnaby and Zed by the stream, sharing oranges and taking pictures of the sunset. And sometimes, when the moon is just right, you might even see Zed wearing Barnaby's orange hat—while they both giggle at how silly it looks.
Because the best friends aren't the ones who look the same. They're the ones who see the beauty in each other, no matter how different they might be.
