The Bear's Magic Hat
Barnaby was a very picky bear. While his brother and sister happily munched on fish and berries, Barnaby would only eat honey.
'I don't like anything else,' he would say, crossing his arms.
One sunny morning, Barnaby was exploring the forest when he spotted something red sticking out from behind a mossy rock. It was a hat—a bright red cap with a golden star right on the front.
'How strange,' Barnaby thought. 'Bears don't wear hats.' But something about it made him curious. He picked it up and placed it on his fuzzy head.
Suddenly, the most wonderful smell filled the air. Barnaby followed his nose to a small garden he had never noticed before. Growing there were green leaves he had never seen.
'What are those?' he wondered.
An old rabbit hopped by. 'That's spinach, little bear. It makes you strong as an oak tree and fast as a river.'
Barnaby wrinkled his nose. 'I don't think I'll like it.' But his growling tummy told him to try. He took a small bite.
His eyes went wide. It was crisp and fresh and tasted like sunshine after rain! He ate more, feeling energy tingle through his paws.
'I can run faster than ever!' Barnaby cheered, zooming around the meadow.
That evening, Barnaby wore his red hat to dinner. When his family saw him eating the spinach he had brought home, they could hardly believe their eyes.
'What changed your mind?' his mother asked.
Barnaby touched his hat and smiled. 'I learned that trying new things—even ones you think you won't like—can be the best surprise of all.'
From that day on, Barnaby still loved honey, but he also tried something new every week. And he always kept his red hat nearby, just in case he needed a little magic to help him be brave.
