The Bear's Magic Baseball
Emma loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, she practiced hitting in her backyard, dreaming of joining the neighborhood team. But Emma kept missing the ball. She'd swing and swing, but her bat only caught air. One hot summer day, frustrated and ready to quit, Emma threw her baseball toward the creek behind her house. The ball splashed into the water and disappeared. Emma ran to the edge, peering into the rippling stream. Suddenly, bubbles rose to the surface, and out popped a giant brown bear wearing an old baseball cap! 'You've got quite an arm,' the bear said, shaking water from his fur. Emma couldn't believe her eyes. 'You can talk?' The bear chuckled. 'Name's Barney. I've been watching you practice.' He pulled the soggy baseball from the water. 'You're not keeping your eye on the ball. You're thinking about missing instead of hitting.' That afternoon, Barney taught Emma everything he knew about baseball. He showed her how to stand like a tree with strong roots, how to swing like she was conducting a symphony, and most importantly, how to believe in herself before every pitch. 'The magic isn't in the bat,' Barney told her. 'It's in your heart.' When Emma's mother called her for dinner, the mysterious bear tipped his cap and slipped back into the water, disappearing with a splash. The next day at tryouts, Emma remembered Barney's words. She kept her eye on the ball, swung with confidence, and hit it soaring over the fence. She made the team! Every time Emma plays baseball now, she waves toward the creek, and sometimes, if the water is just right, she sees a wet baseball cap floating on the surface. Barney had taught her the most important lesson: believing in yourself is the real magic.
