The Bear's Golden Promise
Lila loved the old palm tree in her backyard. Its leaves whispered secrets when the wind blew, and Lila would press her own palm against its rough trunk, feeling like they were best friends.
One summer afternoon, Lila was braiding her grandmother's silver hair under the palm tree when something magical happened. A tiny tear rolled down her cheek because she missed her grandmother, who was in the hospital.
Suddenly, the palm tree's lowest leaf began to shimmer. A small bear cub appeared—no bigger than a coconut—with fur that sparkled like morning dew.
"Why are you sad?" the bear asked in a voice like gentle rain.
Lila gasped. "You can talk?"
"I'm the Guardian Bear of the Palm," said the cub. "Your love for this tree woke me up."
Lila poured out her heart, telling the bear about her grandmother. The bear listened carefully, then touched Lila's palm with its tiny paw. Something warm and golden flowed between them.
"Take this," the bear said, pressing a single hair from its golden fur into Lila's hand. "It's magic, but only works if you give it away."
Lila rushed to the hospital. She placed the golden hair on her grandmother's pillow. That night, her grandmother's fever broke, and she opened her eyes with a smile.
"What happened?" her grandmother asked later.
Lila looked at her palm, where the bear's touch had left a tiny golden palm print—the shape of a bear's paw.
"Just some magic," she whispered, "and a very special friend who taught me that the greatest gift is sharing."
The bear was gone when Lila returned home. But she knew it was still there, hidden in the palm tree's leaves. Now whenever she presses her palm against the trunk, she feels warmth—and sometimes, if she listens closely, she can hear the bear's tiny laughter in the wind.
