The Bear's Gift

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's cottage every summer. Behind the cottage, hidden among tall pine trees, was a secret swimming pool that Lily had discovered all by herself. The pool was surrounded by smooth gray stones and filled with the clearest, bluest water she had ever seen.

One hot afternoon, Lily ran to the pool, her curly red hair bouncing with every step. But she stopped suddenly. There, sitting on the largest rock, was the most enormous bear she had ever seen!

Lily wanted to run, but something about the bear's gentle brown eyes made her stay. The bear didn't look scary at all. In fact, it looked sad.

"Hello," Lily whispered, her voice trembling just a little.

The bear lifted its massive head and let out a soft rumble. To Lily's surprise, it spoke! "Hello, little one. I am Bruno."

Bruno had shaggy brown hair that stuck out in every direction, and small leaves were tangled in his fur. "I've been crying," Bruno admitted. "My favorite hair ribbon fell into the water, and I'm too big to reach it."

Lily looked into the crystal-clear pool. Sure enough, a bright blue ribbon floated near the bottom.

"I can help!" Lily said bravely. She rolled up her pants and stepped into the cool water. It felt magical against her skin, like tiny bubbles were kissing her legs. She reached down and plucked the ribbon from the pool.

Bruno's eyes lit up. "Thank you! You're very brave. Most people run away when they see a bear."

"You seem too nice to be scary," Lily said with a smile.

Bruno handed her a beautiful, smooth stone from the pool's edge. "This is my gift to you. Whenever you hold it, you'll remember that helping others makes you braver than you ever imagined."

Lily kept that stone for years, and whenever she felt afraid, she would hold it and remember the kind bear with the messy hair who taught her that courage isn't about being big or strong—it's about choosing to help, even when you're a little bit scared.
