The Bear Pool Float Manifesto
Maya stood at the edge of the pool party, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The backyard of Jenna's house was packed—sophomores floated on inflatables, juniors blasted music, and Caleb, the baseball captain, stood by the snack table looking unfairly good in his swim trunks.
Her stomach did that thing where it felt like someone was squeezing it from the inside. She'd spent the morning watching his Instagram stories, analyzing whether that wave emoji meant he was interested or just friendly.
"Hey! You made it!" Jenna materialized, splashing water everywhere. "Come in!"
"I'm good," Maya said, even though she wasn't. Not at all.
She'd forgotten her swimsuit anyway. Or that's what she told herself. Really, she just wasn't ready to be seen.
"You can use my extra bear float!" Jenna pointed to a massive brown bear pool float that had been abandoned near the fence. It was ridiculous—ears, snout, the whole deal. Something a little kid would use.
But then Maya saw Caleb walking toward the pool, laughing with his friends, his baseball muscles shifting under tanned skin. She realized she had two choices: stand here awkwardly scrolling through fake-casual texts, or risk something.
She grabbed a handful of her mom's vitamin gummies from her pocket—her secret courage stash—and chewed them aggressively. They didn't actually do anything except taste like artificial grape, but the ritual helped.
Then she marched over to the bear float, dragged it to the water's edge, and flopped onto it like it was a throne.
"What are you DOING?" asked Lexi, who had been giving her side-eye since seventh grade.
"Living my best life," Maya said, paddling her bear float toward the deep end. "This is me. Bear and all."
Caleb noticed. She saw him notice. He smiled—actually smiled—and shook his head like he was impressed.
Later, when she dripped onto the pool deck, he caught her arm. "Hey. The bear float. That was... pretty fearless."
"Courage is just vitamin gummies and pretending," she said.
He laughed. "Well. It worked."
The next morning, Maya posted a picture of herself on the bear float, captioned: "bear essentials only." Caleb liked it immediately. Sometimes the weird choices are the ones that make you unforgettable.
