The Bear Incident

Maya stared at her reflection, fingers tangling in her newly dyed purple hair. First day of sophomore year and she was finally going to be the girl who didn't care what anyone thought. At least, that's what she'd posted on her finsta last night.

Her iPhone buzzed — three notifications in quick succession. GROUP CHAT: Alex: "party @ Jordan's tonight, parents out of town ;))))"

Maya's stomach did that thing it always did when social stuff came up. A mix of FOMO and genuine dread. But she'd promised herself this year would be different. New hair energy, right?

"You're actually going?" said Chloe, her older sister, not looking up from her phone. "Remember what happened at homecoming?"

"Don't even start." Maya grabbed her backpack. Their cat, Mochi, wound through her legs, meowing for treats like the tiny manipulator he was.

The party was exactly what Maya expected: too many people, not enough oxygen, and someone's dog — a golden retriever named Cooper — jumping on everyone like he'd personally never met a human before.

Then she saw Liam. Liam with the perfect hair and the fact he'd liked her story last Tuesday. She made her way across the room, heart doing something genuinely embarrassing.

"Hey!" he said, all genuine surprise. "Your hair looks sick, honestly."

They talked for twenty minutes about nothing and everything. Maya felt like she was nailing it. Right up until Cooper came barreling through the kitchen, knocked into a girl holding a red cup, which somehow led to Maya instinctively catching the girl's arm but losing her balance and toppling into —

Not Liam.

His friend Marcus, who caught her but not before she'd nearly taken out an entire table of snacks. The music cut. Everyone stared.

"You good?" Marcus asked, eyebrows raised.

Maya wanted to dissolve. This was it. The cringe moment that would live on in group chat infamy.

But then Liam started laughing. Not mean laughing — the genuine kind, like he was actually impressed. "Did you just almost bear-hug Marcus to save the chips? That's legendary."

Someone else yelled, "Bear tactics!" and suddenly the tension broke into something else. People were laughing with her, not at her.

"Y'all are dramatic," Maya said, standing up and pretending her face wasn't burning hot. "I was protecting the snacks. It was literally self-defense."

Cooper chose that moment to shake himself, spraying dog water everywhere. The room erupted into groans and laughter.

Later that night, Maya sat on her bed, Mochi purring loudly in her lap like he hadn't spent the entire evening ignoring her existence. Her phone lit up: Liam from the group chat, DMing her directly.

"Tonight was actually fun. you're funny af. want to hang out this weekend?"

Maya caught herself grinning at her phone like a total loser.

New hair energy, apparently. It worked.
