The Bear in the Speedo

Marcus stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching his lucky snapback like a lifeline. The first day of sophomore year swim tryouts, and he was regretting everything.

"You're not seriously wearing that hat in the water," said Jenna, the girl he'd been crushing on since seventh grade. She stood at the pool's edge, her hair perfect even in humidity.

"It's for luck," Marcus mumbled, feeling his face burn. "Whatever." He plunged into the cool water, hat still gripped in his hand, because he was that pathetic.

The coach blew his whistle. "Alright, everyone out! We're doing something different today. Human pyramids!"

"Seriously?" someone groaned.

"Teamwork, people! Get in groups of six!" Marcus found himself shoved into a cluster with Jenna and four others. Of course.

"Someone needs to be the top," Jenna said, looking at Marcus. "You're the lightest."

"What? No way."

"Just do it, Marcus." Her tone made it clear she wasn't asking.

So there he was, barefoot and dripping, balancing precariously on five other teenagers' shoulders in the shallow end. The pyramid wobbled. Marcus's arms windmilled. His lucky hat sat on the pool deck, taunting him.

Then Coach Miller waddled over. The team called him "the Bear" behind his back — massive, hairy, and dangerously unpredictable when hungry.

"STABLE YOURSELVES!" the Bear roared, showering them with spit. "THIS IS HOW CHAMPIONS ARE MADE!"

Marcus caught Jenna's eye. She was trying not to laugh. Something about the Bear's intensity was just... ridiculous. Marcus cracked a smile. Then a giggle. Then full-on laughter.

The pyramid collapsed.

He went down hard, water rushing everywhere. When he surfaced, sputtering and coughing, Jenna was laughing so hard she snorted. The Bear looked confused.

"You okay?" Jenna asked, swimming over. Her perfect hair was plastered to her face now. She looked real.

"Yeah," Marcus said, treading water. "Sorry about the pyramid."

"Whatever. It was stupid anyway." She paddled closer. "Hey, your hat's still lucky."

"How? We literally fell."

"Because now we're talking." She splashed him. "And because I'm pretty sure the Bear's about to order pizza for anyone who survived the Great Pyramid Disaster of 2025."

Marcus laughed, surprised by how good it felt. His hat waited on the deck, but for the first time all day, he didn't feel like he needed luck.

Just pizza. And maybe new friends.
