The Bear in the Room

Maya's iPhone buzzed against the mahogany table, a jarring rhythm that matched the anxiety knotting her stomach. Three years since Sarah had stolen the client—the one that would have made Maya's career—and here they were, meeting for coffee like nothing had happened.

Sarah arrived looking polished and prosperous, her yoga-toned body moving with the confidence of someone who'd never lost a night's sleep over betrayal. She ordered papaya and spinach on the artisanal toast, as if health-conscious brunch choices could erase the past.

"I heard you got the promotion," Maya said, her voice tight.

Sarah nodded, spreading the mashed fruit across the bread with elaborate care. "We should celebrate. Remember how we promised we'd always help each other?"

The word friend hung between them like smoke—something that once warmed them, now just stung their eyes. Maya thought about the emails she'd seen too late, the late-night strategy calls that had turned into strategy for Sarah's solo pitch.

"I'm leaving the firm," Maya said instead.

Sarah paused, papaya halfway to her mouth. "What? You love it there."

"I loved the version of it where I had a partner I could trust." Maya stood up, her chair scraping loud enough to draw attention. "The bear in the room wasn't that you took the opportunity, Sarah. It's that you took it while pretending to be my friend."

She walked out, leaving Sarah alone with the brunch she'd ordered to make herself feel better. Outside, Maya's phone lit up again—another client, another chance to rebuild without the weight of people who'd pretend to love her while sharpening knives behind her back.

The papaya would rot on Sarah's plate. Some things, Maya realized, couldn't be salvaged no matter how sweet they looked on the surface.
