The Bear in the Room
Maya's mom had dropped her off at Tyler's house two hours ago with a warning about 'good choices' and a loaned leopard-print bucket hat that Maya was now regretting. The hat sat perched on her head like a desperate cry for attention—or maybe just desperate period.
The basement party was exactly what Maya expected: too many juniors crushed into a space designed for half as many, someone's older brother's playlist bumping bass through the walls, and the omnipresent glow of screens. Everyone had their iPhone out, documenting every moment like their lives depended on it. Maya's own phone buzzed in her pocket—Snapchat notifications, Instagram stories, the usual FOMO machine.
She'd been hiding in the kitchen for twenty minutes, pretending to be fascinated by a family photo on the fridge, when she heard it.
"Dude, check this out."
A group of guys crowded around the hallway bathroom, laughing. Maya edged closer, clutching her stupid hat. What was so funny?
There, on a shelf above the toilet, sat the most absurd thing she'd ever seen: a massive stuffed bear wearing sunglasses and holding a tiny sign that said BEAR WITH US. It was objectively ridiculous, and yet something about it broke through Maya's wall of self-consciousness.
"That's been there since third grade," said a voice behind her.
Maya jumped. Tyler stood there, solo cup in hand, actually looking at her instead of through her or past her. "My grandma won it at a fair. It's like, the house mascot at this point."
"It's giving... unexpected depth," Maya said, then immediately wanted to dissolve into the floor.
Tyler laughed. Not the fake laugh he gave everyone else. A real one. "Right? Like, we're all just bears in sunglasses trying to look chill."
Something shifted. Maya adjusted her leopard hat, and for the first time all night, she didn't feel like performing. She pulled out her iPhone, but not to scroll—she snapped a picture of the bear.
"Send me that," Tyler said. "And hey, nice hat."
Maya smiled. Maybe ridiculous accessories andunexpected bathroom bears were exactly what she needed.
