The Bear in the Room

The bear head smelled like sophomore year sweat and desperation. I yanked it off, my curly hair frizzing everywhere, and checked my iPhone for the third time in thirty seconds. Still no text from Maya.

"You good, man?" Tyler asked, already halfway through his third solo cup.

"Yeah," I lied, adjusting the ridiculous fur hat that served as my disguise tonight. "Just... you know. Being the mascot."

Homecoming week, and I'd somehow volunteered to wear the bear costume. Or maybe I'd lost a bet. The details were fuzzy, much like the giant plastic eyes I was currently seeing through.

Tyler snorted. "Bro, you're literally spying on your own crush from inside a bear costume. That's some next-level simp energy."

He wasn't wrong. Maya was across the gym, laughing with HER friends—specifically with Jason, the six-foot varsity quarterback who definitely didn't need a foam bear suit to get noticed.

My phone buzzed. Not Maya. My mom: "Have fun at the dance! Don't do anything I wouldn't do ;)"

I groaned. This whole night was a train wreck. Jason was already making his move, leaning in close to whisper something in Maya's ear. She laughed, tossing her hair back like something from a TikTok I'd scroll past at 2 AM feeling like garbage.

"You gonna just stand there being depressing, or are you gonna do something?" Tyler asked.

"What can I do?" I snapped. "Compete with THAT?" I gestured toward Jason, who was now effortlessly balancing a solo cup on his forehead while everyone cheered. "It's like bringing a knife to a gun fight. A foam bear knife."

"So don't compete," Tyler said, like it was that simple. "Just... be you. Without the bear head."

I stared at him. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"It means take off the hat. Stop hiding. Worst case, she says no. Best case..." He shrugged. "At least you'll know."

The bear head sat heavy in my hands. Outside, I was just some kid in a sweaty costume. Inside? I was tired of watching from the sidelines. I pulled out my phone, thumbs hovering over Maya's name.

"Hey," I texted, heart hammering. "Outside in 5? The bear needs some air."

Three dots appeared. Then: "lol omw"

I handed Tyler my phone. "Hold this."

"What? No!" But I was already walking, bear head tucked under my arm like it was the most normal thing in the world. Behind me, I heard Tyler shout, "GET IT, BEAR BOY!" and then everyone was laughing, and for the first time all night, I think I was too.
