The Bear in the Palm

palmfriendbearrunning

Lily was bored. It was a rainy afternoon, and she'd already read all her books twice. That's when she found the mysterious wooden box hidden under her bed.

Inside sat the smallest bear she'd ever seen—no bigger than her thumb! But this wasn't a toy. The bear stretched, yawned, and looked up at her with twinkling black eyes.

"Hello, friend!" said the bear in a squeaky but cheerful voice. "I've been waiting for you."

Lily gasped. "You can talk?"

"I can do much more than that!" The bear climbed onto her palm. "Hold me tight, Lily. We're going running!"

Before Lily could ask where, her room disappeared. Suddenly, she was running through a forest made of candy canes and marshmallow trees. The bear in her palm grew larger with each step until he was big enough for her to ride.

"Faster!" laughed the bear, and they raced past rivers of chocolate and mountains made of ice cream.

Lily had never felt so free. They ran with the wind until they reached a beautiful garden at the edge of the world. There, flowers bloomed in every color imaginable, and butterflies the size of kites danced in the air.

"Why did you bring me here?" Lily asked, breathless with wonder.

The bear shrank back down and climbed onto her palm again. "Because you needed a friend, and I needed someone to believe in magic. Remember, Lily—even on rainy days, adventure is just one bear away."

When Lily opened her eyes, she was back in her room. The wooden box sat empty on her lap. But somehow, the rainy afternoon didn't seem boring anymore.

And sometimes, when she closed her eyes and really believed, she could still feel the tiny weight of a bear in her palm, ready for their next running adventure.

The best friends, she discovered, fit right in your hand—and in your heart.
