The Bear in the Mirror

vitamindogbear

Maya stared at the Vitamin D bottle on her bathroom counter like it held the answers to the universe. She'd been taking them every morning for weeks, ever since her dermatologist said they'd help with her skin. But honestly? Her face was still breaking out before the Winter Formal, and now she was just a girl with good bones and a constellation of pimples on her forehead.

'You ready, Maya?' her mom called from downstairs.

'Almost!' Maya swallowed the vitamin with a gulp of water, grabbed her phone, and headed down.

Their golden retriever, Buster, was waiting at the bottom of the stairs. Old and gray around the muzzle, but still the goodest boy. He nudged her hand with his wet nose, and Maya knelt to scratch behind his ears.

'I know, buddy. I'm nervous too.'

Tonight she was going to tell Jayden how she felt. They'd been lab partners all semester, exchanging memes and inside jokes, and she was pretty sure he liked her back. Pretty sure.

At the party, Maya found herself stuck in a conversation with Tyler, who'd been following her around all night like a lost puppy. 'So, you into supplements? I hear vitamin D is actually a scam.'

Maya excused herself and slipped outside onto the back deck. That's when she saw it—a black bear, ambling through the backyard between the houses. Her heart stopped. It was beautiful and terrifying all at once, its dark coat gleaming under the porch light.

'Hey,' a voice said behind her. Jayden.

They watched the bear together in silence, clouds of breath forming in the cold air. When it disappeared into the woods, Jayden turned to her.

'You know what's crazy? That bear is just out there living its truth. No vitamin bottles, no overthinking everything.' He looked at her. 'You're really chill, Maya. I like that.'

Later, they sat on the front steps, knees touching, talking about everything and nothing. Maya forgot about her skin, forgot about the vitamin she'd taken that morning. For the first time in forever, she wasn't worrying about who she was supposed to be.

'Can I kiss you?' Jayden asked.

She nodded.

It wasn't perfect—noses bumped, teeth clicked. But it was real.

Walking home, Maya thought about the bear, living wild and unapologetic. Maybe that was the secret all along. Not the vitamins or the perfect skin or getting everything right. Just showing up as yourself—messy, authentic, and brave enough to be seen.
