The Bear in the Magic Phone

Lily loved visiting her grandmother's house, especially the old swimming pool in the backyard.

"I'll see you tomorrow," her mother called, waving from the car. Lily waved back, clutching her grandmother's old iphone that Grandma had given her to play with.

The pool shimmered in the evening light. Lily sat on the edge, her legs dangling in the cool water. She tapped the iphone screen, but it only showed static and strange colors. Then something magical happened – the screen grew bright like a tiny moon, and ripples appeared in the air above it.

Suddenly, a great brown bear poked his head through the ripples! He was enormous, with friendly brown eyes and a shiny nose.

"Hello there!" the bear said, his voice warm as honey. "I'm Barnaby. I live in the Magic Stream beyond your phone."

Lily wasn't scared. "I'm Lily. How did you get here?"

"Your phone opened a doorway between our worlds," Barnaby explained. "I've always wanted to see where the water goes."

"Come swim with me!" Lily invited.

The bear climbed through the phone screen – shrinking just enough to fit in the pool – and they splashed and played until the stars came out. Barnaby showed Lily how to catch moonlight on her paw-hands, and Lily showed the bear how to make the biggest splash.

As the sun began to set, Barnaby grew serious. "Lily, I must return to my world. But I want you to have this." He pressed a smooth, heart-shaped stone into her hand. "Whenever you need courage, hold this stone and think of our friendship."

The bear climbed back through the iphone screen, which shimmered like moonlight on water. Lily watched until the ripples faded and the screen showed only static again.

That night, Lily slept with the heart stone under her pillow, dreaming of bear-friendships and magic pools and how the most wonderful adventures can come from the most unexpected places.

The next morning, the iphone worked perfectly. But sometimes, just sometimes, Lily would see ripples moving across the screen, and she'd smile, knowing her friend was swimming in the Magic Stream beyond.
