The Bear in the Corner
Maya's thrifted bucket hat was supposed to be her armor. It was giving main character energy, or at least that's what the TikTok tutorial promised. But standing in Jake's crowded living room, surrounded by people who looked like they'd never experienced a single awkward moment in their lives, the hat just felt like a beacon screaming 'I'm trying too hard.'
She'd spent forty-five minutes on her outfit. She was sixteen, she should be past caring this much. But Jake was different — he was the kind of guy who made accidental eye contact feel meaningful, and Maya had been quietly orbiting his existence since September.
Her phone battery was at 4%. The universal sign of social death.
'Does anyone have a charging cable? Like, a USB-C?' she asked, immediately regretting how her voice came out all pinched and weird.
Three people turned. One of them was Jake.
'Yeah, I think there's one behind the TV,' he said, leading her toward the dark corner of the room. This was it. The moment. They'd bond over technology, he'd fall in love with her quirky humor, they'd date until graduation.
But when they reached behind the entertainment unit, Maya's hand brushed against something fuzzy. She pulled it into the light — a small, threadbare stuffed bear with a missing eye and a homemade cape.
Jake froze. His face did that thing where it looked like he'd swallowed something wrong.
'That's... um. Mr. Thunderpaws.'
'Captain Thunderpaws,' she corrected automatically, then wanted to die. But she didn't. Instead, she heard herself say, 'I had one exactly like this. Mine was Sir Whiskers. He had a lightning bolt on his butt because my sister drew on him with Sharpie and my mom couldn't get it out.'
Jake's shoulders dropped. 'Captain Thunderpaws has a thunderbolt on his paw. My niece drew it. I keep him here because she gave him to me when I started high school and said I needed a brave buddy.'
They looked at each other. The phone could stay at 4%.
'So,' Maya said, 'Captain Thunderpaws approves of house parties?'
'Captain Thunderpaws,' Jake said, 'prefers to observe from a safe distance. You want to go hang out with him?'
Maya adjusted her hat. It wasn't armor anymore. It was just a hat.
'Yeah,' she said. 'Yeah, I do.'
