The Bear in the Blue Hat

Chloe stood at the edge of the community pool, clutching her phone like a lifeline. The annual Summer Slam was in full swing — padel tournament on one side, chaos on the other. Somewhere in this chlorinated nightmare, her little brother Ethan had donned his ridiculous bear headband and disappeared.

"You look like you're about to puke," said Maya, sliding up beside her. Maya, who looked like a summer goddess in her bikini, while Chloe was still in her cutoffs and oversized tee, paralyzed by the social minefield that was suburban teenage existence.

"Ethan's in his full bear mode," Chloe muttered. "Mom said if he embarrassed us one more time, I'm grounded. Which is, like, totally unfair jurisdiction."

Maya snorted. "Chill. He's twelve. It's practically his job to be cringe."

Suddenly, a splash erupted from the deep end. Chloe's stomach dropped. She spotted the blue baseball cap first — hers, stolen earlier that morning — floating like a sad lily pad. Then she saw him: Ethan, in full bear ear headband glory, doing his best impersonation of a synchronized swimmer.

A crowd was gathering. Some dude filming for TikTok. The cutest guy from sophomore year, openly laughing. Chloe wanted to evaporate.

But then Ethan popped up, water streaming down his face, arms raised like Olympic champions. "THE BEAR HAS CONQUERED THE POOL!" he bellowed.

The crowd went wild.

Maya was howling. Actually crying. Chloe stood there, mortification warring with something else — something weirdly proud. Her brother, absolute fearless idiot, owning every square inch of his weirdness.

"You know what?" Maya wiped her eyes. "That kid has main character energy."

Ethan climbed out, shook his bear ears like a wet dog, and offered Chloe a soaked high-five. "Did you see that?! I was basically Michael Phelps. If Michael Phelps was a bear."

Chloe looked at her drenched cap, at her grinning brother, at the crowd still buzzing with genuine delight. Something loosened in her chest.

"Yeah," she said, pulling the hat onto her wet hair. "Yeah, I saw it." She paused, then smirked. "Still never taking you anywhere ever again."

Ethan just beamed. "Worth it."
