The Bear in the Bikini
Maya's legs burned as she kept running, lap after lap around the neighborhood, her lungs screaming in protest. Cross-country practice was brutal, but it was the only thing that drowned out the voice in her head wondering if Leo would actually show up to Jessica's pool party today.
"You're literally overthinking this," her best friend Samira had said that morning. "Leo's been lowkey flirting with you for weeks. Just... don't be weird about it."
Easy for her to say. Samira wasn't the one who'd accidentally texted Leo a crying emoji at 2 AM last week.
The pool party was already in full swing when Maya arrived, her heart doing that annoying fluttery thing. Jessica's backyard was transformed—fairy lights everywhere, TikTok blasting from portable speakers, a giant inflatable swan dominating the water. And there was Leo, looking unfairly good in swim trunks, holding a weird-looking fruit.
"What is that?" Maya found herself asking before she could chicken out.
"Papaya," Leo said, grinning. "Never tried it. Want to be grossed out together?"
Something about the way he said it—like he was just as nervous as she was—made Maya's chest feel lighter. "Sure."
They sat on the edge of the pool, legs dangling in the water, sharing this foreign fruit that tasted like summer and awkward first dates. And then Leo said it: "My friends call me Bear, by the way. Like, apparently I'm 'intimidating' but really I'm just anxious all the time."
Maya laughed so hard she almost fell into the pool. "Bear? Seriously?"
"I know, it's ridiculous," Leo said, and his eyes were soft and genuine. "But I figured... if I'm telling you my embarrassing nickname, maybe you could tell me what you're running from? Because you never stop moving, Maya."
The truth hung between them, heavy and sweet. She wasn't running from anything anymore. She was exactly where she needed to be.
