The Bear in the Bathroom Mirror
Maya's hair was supposed to be sunset pink. Instead, it looked like a highlighter pen had exploded on her head. She stared into the bathroom mirror, iPhone propped up against the toothpaste, watching her friends' Stories from the party she wasn't at.
"You look... bold," her mom had said earlier, sliding a bottle of biotin across the kitchen counter. "These vitamins will help it grow out faster."
Growth. That was the joke. Maya's hair had been falling out in clumps since the incident, since the whisper campaign, since her entire social existence had imploded. Her ex-best friend had started a rumor that spread faster than wildfire, and now Maya was radioactive.
Her phone buzzed. A notification: BEAR_CUB1999 liked your post. The only like on her photo from three days ago.
Bear. That was Nico's nickname from skate camp last summer, before everything changed. Before she'd said something stupid, something she couldn't take back, something that made her realize she didn't know who she was anymore.
She typed out a message: thanks for the like.
Deleted it.
Retyped: hey.
Deleted.
The vitamins sat in their orange bottle on the counter, promising restoration, promising everything could be fixed if you just swallowed enough pills. But what vitamin fixed a reputation? What supplement could make people forget?
Her phone buzzed again. Bear_Cub1999: that color is sick. fr.
Maya's fingers hovered over the screen. For the first time in weeks, something in her chest shifted. Her reflection in the mirror—pink disaster hair, dark circles, everything wrong—suddenly looked like someone worth knowing.
She typed back: it's a disaster.
Bear_Cub1999: nah. it's brave.
Brave. Maya looked at her hair, really looked at it. Maybe highlighter-pink disaster hair was exactly what a brave person would have. Maybe the rumors, the isolation, the slow rebuilding was all just growing pains.
She pocketed her phone, grabbed the vitamin bottle, and walked out of the bathroom. The house was quiet. Tomorrow, she'd go back to school. Tomorrow, she'd face everyone. But tonight, she texted Nico back.
thanks. maybe i'll keep it.
