The Bear in the Bathroom
Maya's hair was supposed to be beach waves. Instead, it looked like a frizz explosion happened on her head.
"You're being dramatic," Chloe said, checking her reflection in the mirror and fixing her lip gloss for the third time. "You look fine. Jake won't care what your hair looks like."
That was exactly the problem. Jake, the cute sophomore Maya had been crushing on for three months, was going to be at Sarah's pool party. And Maya was terrified.
They arrived at Sarah's house, and immediately Maya felt out of place. Everyone looked so effortless, so confident. She grabbed a sparkling water from the cooler to have something to do with her hands.
Then she saw him. Jake. Standing by the pool, laughing with his friends, his damp hair perfect even when wet.
Maya's stomach did that thing where it felt like a million tiny butterflies were having a rave. She hid behind a group of juniors, basically turning herself into a spy. She wasn't proud of it, but she needed intel. Was he seeing anyone? Was he actually interested in anyone here?
Chloe found her and smirked. "You're literally stalking him right now."
"I'm observing," Maya said. "There's a difference."
"Nope. That's 100% spy behavior."
Maya took a sip of her water, trying to look casual. Then someone bumped into her from behind, and she choked. Water went everywhere. Down her dress. All over her already-frizzy hair, which was now somehow worse.
She gasped for air, her face burning hotter than the sun, and bolted for the bathroom. She locked the door and leaned against the sink, staring at her dripping reflection.
This was it. Her social life was over. She'd go down in history as the girl who choked on water and fled like a weirdo.
She heard a knock on the door.
"Occupied," she croaked.
"Maya? You okay in there?"
Jake.
She froze. Was this some kind of cosmic joke? The universe was absolutely messing with her right now.
"Fine," she squeaked. "Just fixing my... hair."
"Cool. I brought you some paper towels."
She opened the door a crack and reached out. A hand placed the paper towels in hers, then hesitated.
"Hey," Jake said. "I know you don't really know me that well, but... you're really funny. Like, in a good way."
Maya blinked. "I'm... dripping wet in a bathroom after choking on water."
"Yeah, it's kind of legendary. I'm impressed, honestly."
She opened the door fully. Jake was standing there, looking genuinely amused. Not mean-amused. Actually amused.
"My little sister calls it her 'bear face' when she gets embarrassed," he said, nodding toward her wet, frizzy hair. "She says she looks like a wet bear."
Maya laughed. She couldn't help it. "I do look like a wet bear, don't I?"
"A very dignified wet bear," he said, grinning. "So, you want to go back out there together? Or are you going to keep hiding in the bathroom?"
Maya looked at her wet-hair, frizzy reflection one more time. Then she grabbed the paper towels.
"Together," she said.
And as they walked back to the party, Maya thought maybe—just maybe—her disaster was actually the best thing that could've happened.
