The Bear in the Basement

bearcablespyfriend

I knew Marcus was acting sus. Like, fully sketchy. He'd been ghosting me for weeks, and when we did hang, he'd always check his phone every thirty seconds, smiling at notifications he wouldn't show me.

"Bro, you good?" I asked as we walked to his house Friday. "You've been lowkey distant lately."

"Yeah, everything's gucci," Marcus said, but he wouldn't meet my eyes. "Just... busy with stuff."

Stuff. Right.

When we got to his place, his mom was working late. Marcus led me to the basement door but stopped before opening it.

"Stay here a sec," he said. "I gotta check something."

He ducked downstairs, and I heard him whispering. Then came this unmistakable sound—a growl. Not like, oh-scary-movie growl. Like, actual-animal growl.

My brain short-circuited. Was Marcus hiding a **bear**? In his BASEMENT? In suburban New Jersey? In WHAT universe did that make sense? Unless...

Wait.

I crept to the basement door and peered through the crack. Marcus was crouched by this massive coil of **cable**, his laptop glowing beside him. And there, sprawled on an old sleeping bag, was the actual cutest **bear** cub I'd ever seen. It was sleeping, snoring softly.

Marcus looked up and spotted me. His face dropped.

"Dude," I whispered. "WHAT."

He sighed and waved me down. "Her mom got hit by a car last week. I found her in the woods behind the park. I've been rehabbing her until she's big enough for the sanctuary."

"You've been... **spy**-ing on me because you didn't want me to find out?"

"I didn't want to weird you out!" Marcus ran a hand through his hair. "Most people would call animal control. I just... I didn't know if you'd get it."

I looked at the cub, then at my best **friend** who'd secretly taken in a wild animal because he couldn't bear to see it suffer.

"Marcus," I said. "That's literally the most awesome thing anyone has ever done."

His shoulders relaxed. "Yeah?"

"Yeah. But you're still a jerk for keeping secrets. We're doing this together now."

The cub shifted, let out a tiny growl, and we both grinned.

Some secrets are worth keeping. But the best ones are the ones you share.
