The Bear in the Bandwidth
Fifteen-year-old Maya hadn't left her cabin in三天. Not because she was antisocial—okay, maybe partly—but because the regional swimming finals were streaming live, and her ancient laptop was tethered to a single coaxial cable that dangled precariously from the ceiling like a lifeline from the digital gods.
Her ex-best friend Sienna was competing in the 200m freestyle. The same Sienna who'd called Maya "too intense" before ghosting her for the popular crowd. The same Sienna whose Instagram stories showed Maya everything she was missing: pool parties, inside jokes, a life that looked effortless.
The connection buffered. Maya's heart sank.
Then she heard it—snapping twigs, heavy breathing. Through the window, a black bear emerged from the forest, massive and iridescent in the moonlight. It was actually… kind of majestic? Not scary-scary, just present, like it owned this place.
The bear pawed at something near the cabin. A loose cable—the backup internet line Maya's dad had strung between trees last winter. The bear tugged. The line went slack.
"NO!" Maya screamed, throwing open the door.
The bear froze. Their eyes locked. Something passed between them—recognition? Amusement? The bear let out a huff that sounded suspiciously like a laugh, then lumbered back into the woods, leaving the cable intact.
Maya's hands shook as she scrambled back inside. The stream reconnected just in time to see Sienna touch the wall—second place. Not first. Still human.
Her phone buzzed. Unknown number: "That was freaking insane. The bear?! You're basically living in a nature documentary. -T"
Ty. From Sienna's squad. He'd seen her Insta story about the bear (she'd posted in adrenaline-fueled autopilot).
"Wanna hang tomorrow? Since you're literally living on the edge of wilderness?"
Maya typed back, her thumbs flying. "Only if you bring better internet cables."
The bear had done what no amount of overthinking could—it broke her isolation. Sometimes the universe interrupts at exactly the right moment.
