The Bear in the Backhand

Leo's palms were sweating. Again.

He stood at the baseline of the padel court, gripping his racket until his knuckles turned white. Across the net, Tyler and his crew were bro-ing it up, laughing at something on Tyler's phone. Probably Leo's failed serve from last practice.

Leo adjusted his snapback—twin to the one Tyler wore, but somehow Tyler's looked cooler. Everything Tyler did looked cooler.

"You good, man?" Marcus asked, bouncing on the balls of his feet. Marcus was chill like that, didn't make Leo feel lame for being nervous about a club match.

"Yeah. Just... ready." Leo lied.

The truth was, Leo hadn't told anyone about the bear costume in his closet. The giant, fuzzy brown mascot head with the slightly crooked ear. He'd inherited the school mascot gig when the previous guy graduated, and somehow he'd kept doing it even though nobody knew it was him. The Bear had become his escape—no expectations, no pressure, just pure chaos under fake fur.

Game point. Tyler's serve.

Leo's palms were slick against the racket handle. He wiped them on his shorts, visible shake in his hands.

The ball came hard. Leo backhanded it without thinking, years of weekend games with his dad taking over. The ball kissed the top of the glass wall and dropped perfect.

Tyler missed.

"SICK!" Marcus yelled, chest-bumping him so hard Leo's hat flew off.

And somehow, in that moment of imperfect perfection, Leo didn't care about looking cool or keeping up appearances. He laughed—genuine, unforced—as they retrieved his hat from the corner.

Maybe the real flex wasn't being effortless. Maybe it was showing up, sweaty palms and all, and taking your shot anyway.

"Same time next week?" Tyler called, grudging respect in his voice.

Leo grinned. "Bet."

The Bear could wait. Today, Leo was just a guy who'd nailed a backhand when it mattered.
