The Bear in My Pocket

Maya's palms were sweating. Like, actually dripping onto her iPhone screen. She wiped them on her shorts for the third time, staring at the group of juniors by the pool. Tyler was there, of course. Tyler with his perfect hair and his perfect laugh and his perfect ability to make everything look effortless.

"You good?" Maya's best friend Chloe asked, sliding next to her. "You look like you're about to pass out."

"I'm fine," Maya lied. "Just... hydrating."

She chugged more water from her plastic bottle, pretending it wasn't the fourth one in twenty minutes. Nerves made her thirsty, okay?

The thing was, Maya had something in her pocket that would absolutely ruin her social life if anyone found out. Not drugs. Not a weapon. But somehow worse for a fifteen-year-old trying to establish herself as remotely cool at Chloe's end-of-summer pool party.

A small, bedraggled teddy bear she'd had since she was three. Bear Bear had seen her through nightmares, dentist appointments, and her parents' divorce. She'd accidentally grabbed him when throwing her towel in her bag this morning, and now she couldn't figure out how to extract him without anyone noticing.

"Hey!" someone shouted. "Bear crawl race!"

Maya froze. Was this a joke? Was the universe personally attacking her?

But no. Tyler was already on all fours, lumbering across the grass like an absolute idiot while everyone cracked up. Even Maya had to smile—Tyler wasn't perfect, he was just confidently weird.

"You gonna join?" Chloe grinned. "Or are you too cool for bear crawling?"

Something about the moment—the ridiculousness, Tyler being uncool for once, the way Chloe's eyes were dancing—made Maya decide to stop overthinking everything. She reached into her pocket and pulled out Bear Bear.

"Actually," she held him up, "I brought my own."

For a second, silence. Then Chloe burst out laughing. "No WAY you still have him!"

"Bear Bear stays," Maya said, surprising herself with how steady her voice was. "He's basically emotional support at this point."

Tyler looked up from his very serious bear crawl attempt. "Dude, Bear Bear is iconic. 10 out of 10, no notes."

Maya's palms weren't sweating anymore. She walked toward the pool, Bear Bear tucked safely in her bag, and for the first time all night, she didn't feel like performing. She just felt... present.

"Race you," she called to Tyler, and jumped in the water, phone and dignity and all.
