The Bear In My Bathroom Mirror

I stared into the bathroom mirror, and yeah, no exaggeration—a literal bear was staring back. Or at least that's what the frizzy disaster on top of my head looked like after that humidity incident at the padel courts.

"Your hair is giving main character energy," Maya had joked earlier, but I was pretty sure she meant villain origin story energy.

That morning had started with max potential. I was finally going to learn padel from Lucas, who I'd been lowkey crushing on since September. The plan was solid: show up, act casual, maybe accidentally look athletic. What actually happened: my phone charger cable somehow wrapped around my ankle during my first swing, and I went down like a fainting goat.

Lucas didn't laugh. He just helped me up and said, "First time playing?"

"Yeah," I said, face burning hotter than my phone battery after gaming all night. "Is it that obvious?"

"Only because you're gripping the racket like it's your ex's hoodie," he'd deadpanned.

By the time I got home, my hair had fully embraced its inner wilderness. That's when Bear—my chocolate lab, named after my dad's weird obsession with wilderness documentaries—decided to muddy-paw all over my clean laundry.

"Bear, NO!" I'd screamed, which apparently was my sister's cue to FaceTime me.

"Why are you spiraling?" she asked, taking in my hair situation. "And why is there a bear in your bathroom?"

"Metaphorical bear," I corrected, though Bear was currently licking my pile of clean socks. "Real bear is the disaster of my social life."

"First padel lesson gone wrong?" She knew everything.

"He was nice about it, though," I admitted. "Even helped me untangle the cable from my foot."

My sister paused. "Wait, he didn't laugh? He stayed calm? And helped you?"

"Yeah..."

"Okay, listen to me," she said, suddenly serious. "Your hair looks wild, but you look alive. You tried something new, you survived the most embarrassing moment ever, and a decent human being witnessed it and still wants to hang out tomorrow. That's not failure, that's plot development."

I looked in the mirror again. The bear was still there, but somehow it didn't look so scary anymore. It looked like someone who was trying stuff, even when it went sideways.

"He's picking me up at noon," I told Maya. "I'm gonna wear the hat."
