The Bear in My Backpack

hairbeardogrunning

Maya's hair had been acting basic all morning—frizzy in the humidity, refusing to lay flat despite the oversized claw clip she'd bought because TikTok said it was aesthetic. She checked her reflection in the locker room mirror, groaning. Great. First day of track tryouts and she looked like a hot mess.

"You good, Maya?" Jordan asked, leaning against the lockers with his effortless chill energy. His hair was perfect, naturally.

"Solid," she lied, giving him a peace sign. Because admitting she was terrified wasn't an option. Not when everyone expected her to crush it, just like her older sister had.

But here's the thing nobody knew: Maya still slept with the stuffed bear her grandma gave her when she was seven. Bear-Bear, she called him creatively. And this morning, in a moment of absolute chaos, she'd accidentally shoved him into her backpack instead of her water bottle.

Her dog, Buster—a rescue with one ear that flopped and chaotic golden fur—was her only confidant about this stuff. He'd listened (and probably judged) when she vented about high school being low-key terrifying.

Now, as the coach blew the whistle for warm-ups, Maya's backpack zipper failed. Bear-Bear tumbled out onto the track, his glass button eyes staring judgmentally at her entire existence.

Dead silence. Then someone snorted.

But it wasn't mean-sounding. Jordan scooped up the bear, dusted him off, and tossed him back with zero judgment. "My little cousin has that same one. No cap, that thing's legendary."

"Really?" Maya asked, her face heating up.

"For real." He grinned. "I still have my childhood blanket. Don't tell nobody though."

The anxiety knot in her chest loosened. Maybe being basic was okay. Maybe everyone was low-key weird about something.

Running track that afternoon, hair frizzy and Bear-Bear secretly safe in her bag again, Maya finally felt real. Not perfect. Not legendary. Just solid. And maybe that was enough.
