The Bear in Left Field

Marcus's thumb hovered over the screen of his iPhone, the Instagram post from Maya sitting there, waiting for a response. She'd tagged him in a photo from yesterday's lunch—"Baseball boys vs. Softball girls ~ we won obviously"—and his heart did that stupid fluttery thing it always did when she noticed him.

"Marcus! You're up!" Coach Miller's voice cut through his thoughts.

He shoved his phone deep into his back pocket and grabbed his bat. The tryouts were everything. If he made JV, he'd actually have something worth posting about. Something to make Maya stop seeing him as the quiet kid who sat behind her in English.

The first pitch came. Swing and a miss. Second pitch—foul ball. His palms were sweating, making the grip slippery. Third pitch, and he connected. The ball sailed toward left field, keeps going, and then—

"BEAR!"

Everyone screamed. There, emerging from behind the left field fence like it was the most normal thing in the world, was a black bear. A real, actual bear, ambling toward the baseball like it was a curious toy.

"Everyone BACK UP NOW!" Coach Miller shouted, but nobody needed convincing. The team scrambled toward the dugout, phones out everywhere, Snapchat stories already recording.

Marcus's heart hammered. The bear sniffed his baseball, then sat down and looked at them like, "What's your problem?"

"Is it... is it gonna charge?" someone whispered.

And then Marcus was moving. Not away, but toward the fence. His phone was in his hand before he realized it, camera pointed at the most insane thing that had ever happened in this boring town.

"Marcus, get back here!"

"Look at its face," Marcus said, showing Coach the screen. "It's not aggressive. It's just... chill."

The bear sat there for exactly forty-seven seconds, sniffed the baseball one more time, then lumbered back into the woods like it had somewhere better to be.

"Did anyone get that on video?" demanded Jason, the team captain. "That's gonna go viral."

"I got it," Marcus said. His hands shook. "I got the whole thing."

That night, his post blew up. Three thousand likes. But better? Maya's DM: "omg you were so brave!! that bear was literally closer to you than anyone 😳"

Marcus smiled at his phone, the bear in left field becoming his origin story. Not because he was brave, but because for once, he'd been the one with the story worth telling.
