The Bear Hat Incident
Maya stood at the edge of the lake, clutching her dad's old trucker **hat** like a lifeline. Senior year pool party. The cool kids clustered around the bonfire, their laughter floating across the **water** like secrets she wasn't part of. She'd spent twenty minutes fixing her hair, but now she couldn't even talk to anyone.
"Just go over there," she whispered to herself. "You're literally seventeen years old. Act normal."
She pulled the hat low over her forehead and marched toward the group. Kai—her crush since sophomore year—was laughing at something Tyler said. Maya's stomach did that embarrassingly dramatic flip it always did when he was near.
"Hey!" she called out, then immediately wanted to die. Her voice cracked. What was she supposed to say next?
Kai turned. His eyes landed on her hat. "Nice hat."
"Thanks!" Maya said way too loudly. "It's vintage. My dad wore it to, like, protests and stuff."
Tyler snorted. "Cool story, Maya."
Her face burned. She backed away, nearly tripping over something huge and fuzzy in the darkness. A giant stuffed **bear** some drunk sophomore must have abandoned. Maya snatched it up like an idiot, holding it like a shield between her and her awkwardness.
"I'm just...gonna return this," she mumbled, and speed-walked toward the cabins.
"Maya, wait!" Kai's voice cut through the night. He caught up to her, breathless. "You forgot your—"
He held up her dad's hat.
"Oh. Thanks."
"So," he said, "I actually like the hat. And the bear rescue thing? Kinda badass."
Maya's heart did something illegal. "Yeah?"
"Yeah. Want to skip the bonfire and hang out by the docks instead?"
She adjusted the hat, suddenly feeling like maybe she belonged here after all. "Absolutely."
Under the moonlight, with the water lapping gently against the shore and the bear tucked safely beside them, Maya finally took her first real breath all night.
