The Bear Hat Incident
First day of sophomore year and I'm already questioning every life choice that led me here. I'm standing in front of my mirror, staring at the hat my cousin sent me from college — a fuzzy brown bear hat with ears that actually move when you pull strings. 'It'll be hilarious,' she'd said. 'You'll be a legend.' Spoiler alert: I was not a legend.
I'm already running late because my mom made me take my daily vitamin with breakfast — 'brain food for your big day!' — which she apparently thinks will magically fix my GPA. As if.
I grab the bear hat. What's the worst that could happen?
The moment I walk into homeroom, the whispers start. Jake, who's somehow already sitting in the back with his varsity jacket even though football season hasn't started, points at me. 'Nice look, Teddy Ruxpin.' His friends crack up.
My face burns. I consider bolting, but then Maya — who I've been lowkey crushing on since seventh grade — looks up from her phone and actually smiles. 'Wait, is that a bear hat?' She grins. 'That's honestly kind of iconic.'
I stand up straighter. 'Yeah, it's for comfort. My emotional support animal, but make it fashion.'
The class goes quiet. Then someone — I think it was Jake, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt — laughs. Actually laughs. Not mean laughter. Real laughter.
By lunch, I'm getting fist bumps. People are calling me Bear Guy. Maya sits with me and asks if the ears are functional. I demonstrate. She laughs, and my heart does that embarrassing flutter thing.
Later that night, my mom asks how my day went. I tell her about the hat, the laughter, Maya sitting with me.
'See?' She pushes the vitamin bottle toward me. 'I told you those vitamins would help. You're coming out of your shell.'
I roll my eyes, but I'm smiling. Maybe she's right — not about the vitamins, obviously, but about coming out of my shell. Sometimes you have to wear a ridiculous bear hat to find out who you actually are.
And maybe, just maybe, that person is someone who doesn't care what Jake thinks. Someone who can make a girl like Maya laugh. Someone who's okay with being a little weird.
I put the bear hat on my nightstand. Tomorrow, I'm wearing it again. Why? Because it's awesome, that's why.
