The Bear Hat Incident
I spotted him across the cafeteria — Chase, the junior varsity quarterback, sitting at the cool table. My hand shook as I adjusted the stupid papaya-colored beanie my abuela had knitted me. "Wear it, mija," she'd said. "It matches your spirit."
I was supposed to be in geometry, but sometimes you gotta risk detention for potential romance. Right?
I marched over, determined to finally talk to him after three months of silent hallway stares. But halfway there, disaster struck. Jason — the school's actual bear of a mascot, six-foot-three and padded like a walking mattress — lunged out of nowhere for a high-five with some freshman.
His giant bear paw swiped my head. The papaya beanie flew across the cafeteria.
And landed directly in Chase's lunch tray.
Time stopped. Literally, I think my heart paused. Jason froze. The whole cool table went silent. Chase stared at my abuela's bright orange creation sitting squarely on his turkey sandwich.
"Is that..." Chase picked up the beanie with two fingers. "A bear ate your hat?"
The table erupted. Not mean laughter. Like, genuine laughter.
"Bro, you just got bear-swatted," someone said.
"That's literally the most freshman thing that's ever happened," Chase said, grinning. "But this color? Actually kind of a vibe."
He tossed it back. I caught it, face burning.
"Sorry," I mumbled.
"Don't be," Chase said. "That was legendary." He nodded at the empty seat beside him. "Sit. Tell us about your hat situation."
I sat. And somewhere between explaining my abuela's knitting obsession and Jason's mascot training, I forgot to be nervous. I forgot I was the weird new girl with the weird fruit-colored accessories.
The bell rang. Everyone scattered.
"Hey," Chase called, walking backward toward his class. "Wear the hat tomorrow. It matches your vibe too."
I touched the papaya beanie. Maybe abuela was right. Maybe matching your spirit means wearing it — even when a giant bear tries to eat it.
