The Bear by the Back Gate

The pool party was everything Maya dreaded. Fourth of July at Tyler's house, chlorine smell mixing with cheap cologne, someone blasting that same song everyone pretended to like. Maya clutched her red snapback like a lifeline, hair flattened under it because she hadn't washed it for two days.

"You good?" said Jessie, sliding next to her. Jessie, who'd been Maya's friend since they were seven and Maya cried over a scraped knee.

"Fine," Maya lied, but her hands betrayed her, shaking around the soda can.

Then it happened — a freshman cannonballing into the pool sent a wall of water everywhere. Maya's soaked sweatshirt plastered against her stomach, and something terrible tumbled from her pocket. Barnaby. The stuffed bear she'd had since she was four, the one she secretly slept with when anxiety hit hard.

The silence was absolute. Barnaby floated there, his patched-up eye staring at everyone, while Maya's face burned hotter than the sun.

Someone snickered. Maya scrambled to grab him, but then Jessie was there, waist-deep in the water, holding Barnaby up like some kind of prize.

"Yo, who let this beast in?" Jessie shouted, dead serious. "This bear's got more rizz than half you people."

The tension broke. People laughed, but it was different — genuine.

Maya grabbed her hat from the deck where it had fallen. "Whatever, he's vintage."

"He's iconic," Jessie corrected, swimming over with Barnaby. "Don't let these basic people judge. We've all got our stuff."

Later, they sat on the back porch drying off. The sun was setting, turning the sky pink and gold.

"I was mortified," Maya admitted.

"Yeah, I know," Jessie said. "But also? Maybe don't be. Like, who cares if you sleep with a bear? That's honestly valid. These years are bear enough without pretending to be someone you're not."

Maya smiled. "Did you just make a bear pun?"

"I DID," Jessie announced triumphantly. "Barnaby approved."

And for the first time all night, Maya actually felt cool — not the fake kind that required the perfect hat or the right friends. The kind that felt like finally breathing after holding it in too long.
