The Bear Beanie Incident
Mia's phone pinged with a notification that made her heart do that weird fluttery thing it did whenever Jake's name appeared on screen. 'Party at my place friday. U coming?'
She stared at her reflection in the bathroom mirror. Her hair was frizzy from the humidity, her mascara slightly smudged, and on her head sat the monstrosity: a brown knit hat with teddy bear ears that her mom had impulsively bought from a street vendor last weekend. 'It's SO cute, Mia! You'll look so cozy!'
Meanwhile, Mia's older sister Chloe, a junior in high school with perfect eyeliner and a social life that seemed to consist entirely of parties Mia wasn't invited to, had texted earlier: 'aww is that the bear hat from mom? lmao'
Mia considered throwing the hat into the darkest corner of her closet. Instead, she jammed it on her head and marched downstairs.
'I'm going to Tyler's,' she announced, already halfway out the door. Her puppy, Bear—a chaotic fluffball of golden retriever energy that her younger brother had named despite Mia's protests that 'Bear is literally the most basic dog name ever'—came bounding down the stairs, nearly knocking her over in his excitement. 'No, Bear, no!'
The run to Tyler's house wasn't far, but it was enough for Mia to work up a good sweat, especially wearing a wool hat in July. Still, she kept it on.
Tyler's basement was already crowded when she arrived. Jake was there, looking annoyingly perfect in his ripped jeans and faded band t-shirt. Mia hovered near the snack table, self-conscious and awkward, as usual. She was about to retreat to a corner when she noticed someone pointing at her head.
'Nice hat,' said a girl she vaguely recognized from homeroom. 'Where'd you get it?'
Mia froze. This was it—the moment she'd been dreading. The laughter. The judgment. The social suicide.
'My mom got it for me,' she heard herself say, ready to bolt.
'That's actually kind of awesome,' Jake said, appearing beside her with a handful of chips. 'My sister would love that.'
Mia blinked. 'Really?'
'Yeah. She's obsessed with cute stuff like that.' He smiled, and Mia's stomach did that fluttery thing again. 'You want to play Mario Kart? Tyler just set it up.'
They ended up squished on Tyler's beat-up couch, passing a controller back and forth, knees bumping, Bear back at home probably destroying something expensive. Mia played terribly, but Jake didn't seem to care.
On her walk home, still wearing the bear hat, her phone buzzed. Jake. 'had fun tonight. btw that hat is actually kind of iconic on u'
Mia smiled into the darkness, typing back, 'thanks :)'
That night, she sent Chloe a selfie—bear hat and all—with the caption: 'found my aesthetic, what do u think'
Chloe replied: 'ok ok i see the vision. ur pulling it off'
And maybe Mia wasn't totally wrong about that.
