The Bear at the Pool

The corporate retreat was Elena's idea—a weekend at the desert resort to boost morale. She should have known better. Now she stood at the edge of the infinity pool, nursing a gin and tonic she didn't want, watching Diego stretch his hamstrings before their padel match. His dark hair was already plastering to his forehead in the Mojave heat.

"You coming?" he called, racket in hand.

"In a minute," she lied. She'd discovered the email on his laptop two nights ago: encrypted messages to their competitor, price sheets, product roadmaps. Diego, the golden boy of sales, was the spy they'd been hunting for six months.

What hurt wasn't the betrayal. It was that she'd slept with him last Friday in the supply closet, his fingers tangled in her hair, his breath hot against her neck as he whispered about their future together. She'd believed him.

The real estate market had been a bear all year, and Diego had been hedging his bets—personally and professionally. Elena wasn't naive. She'd played corporate games before. But she'd never been the game piece.

She watched him laugh with the CEO's daughter at the padel court, his hand familiar on her shoulder. The same shoulder he'd touched with equal tenderness on Elena's bare skin just five days ago.

Elena set her drink on the patio table. The water in the pool shimmered, deceptive and calm—much like the man stretching under the desert sun. She could confront him. She could go to HR. She could slip a copy of that email to the board.

Instead, she walked toward the padel court, racket in hand. Diego turned, his face lighting up with that practiced warmth.

"Ready to get destroyed, El?" he grinned.

She smiled back, tight and bright. "Diego, sweetheart. You have no idea."
