The Bear at the Bottom of the Pool

The water was always colder at 5 AM, which was exactly why Elena chose that hour. The indoor pool at the Crystal Pyramid Resort sat empty, the pyramid-shaped glass ceiling catching the first gray light of dawn. She swam laps not for exercise, but because the water was the only place her mind stopped spinning.

Forty-two years old and drowning. Not in the pool—never in the pool—but in the life she'd built. The multilevel marketing company she'd sunk her savings into had collapsed last week, leaving her with a garage full of supplements and a marriage that had been安静支撐該火熄滅太久。

She pushed off the wall, stroke after stroke, counting the beats like rosary prayers. One, two, three, breathe. One, two, three, breathe. The rhythm had become her anchor.

Then she saw it.

At the bottom of the pool, beneath the deep end, something dark and massive. A shadow that didn't belong. Elena tread water, heart hammering, and realized what she was seeing: a stuffed bear, the kind children win at carnivals, sunken and forgotten, its fur spreading like seaweed in the currents.

Something about that abandoned bear—the cheerful grin now grotesque underwater, the single eye that had fallen away—broke something loose in her chest. She dove down, wrapped her arms around it, and kicked upward, breaking the surface gasping.

"Jesus, you scared me."

A man stood at the pool's edge. Older, maybe fifty, in a resort robe that said MANAGER.

"My daughter lost that," he said, gesturing to the bear. "Three years ago. We never could find it."

Elena floated there, holding this waterlogged symbol of childhood loss, and began to laugh. A laugh that started somewhere deep and cracked open everything inside her. She was thirty feet underwater, holding a dead bear, laughing like she might never stop, while the first real sunlight of her life began to spill through the pyramid above them both.

"Keep it," the manager said softly. "I think you need it more."

She did.
