The Bear at Padel

Elena's hair stuck to her neck in humid strands as she slammed the padel racket against the blue glass wall. The ball ricocheted back at Marcus, sweat dripping down his temples. They'd played this court every Tuesday for three years, since before the marriage, before the silence grew between them like winter ice.

"You're tense," Marcus said, wiping his forehead with his orange bandana.

"Remember Glacier National?" The words escaped before she could stop them. That trip last October—the grizzly bear encounter that had crystallized everything wrong between them. While the massive creature had sniffed their campsite, Marcus had kept filming with his phone. Elena had gripped their bear spray, terrified, watching the man she loved choose content over safety.

The bear had lumbered away eventually. But something in their marriage hadn't.

"That was months ago." Marcus's serve went into the net.

"It changed everything."

They played in silence until dusk settled over the court. The orange sky deepened to purple, matching the bruise-colored shadows under Marcus's eyes. At home, their cat Whiskers waited by the door—Elena's only constant companion lately, the only living thing that still greeted her with genuine enthusiasm.

"I've been seeing someone," Marcus said suddenly, leaning against his racket. The words hit harder than any serve could.

"Since when?"

"Since the bear. You haven't been the same. Neither have I."

Elena's fingers trembled around her racket handle. She'd suspected. The late nights, the sudden business trips, the way his phone always faced down on the nightstand.

"Whiskers likes me better anyway," she said, surprised by her own calm.

Marcus laughed bitterly. "She does."

They stood under the floodlights as moths danced around the bulbs, and for the first time in months, something honest passed between them.

"I'll move out this weekend," Marcus said.

"Take the orange bandana. It was always your favorite."

He did. And as Elena walked home alone to feed Whiskers, she realized the bear hadn't ruined their marriage—it had simply revealed what was already dead. The season of endings had arrived, and somewhere beyond the padel court's blue walls, something new might eventually grow.
