The Bear and the Wishing Goldfish
Barnaby was a small bear with very big dreams. While other bears spent their days catching salmon, Barnaby spent his days sitting by the crystal stream, talking to the fish.
One afternoon, something magical happened. A tiny goldfish with scales like sunset clouds popped her head above the water.
"Hello, Barnaby!" she said. "I'm Clementine, and I can grant you one wish!"
Barnaby's eyes grew wide. "Really? I've always wanted to be the biggest, strongest bear in the forest!"
Clementine swam in a happy circle. "I know just the thing! In the secret garden beyond the waterfall grows magical spinach. It's full of a special vitamin that makes bears grow as big as mountains!"
Barnaby rushed to the secret garden and found the glowing spinach leaves. He ate every single one. He waited. He waited some more. But he didn't grow bigger at all.
Disappointed, Barnaby returned to the stream. "Clementine, you tricked me! I'm still small!"
Clementine smiled gently. "I didn't trick you. The magical spinach worked exactly as it should. You wanted to be the biggest, strongest bear — but you already were."
"What do you mean?"
"You're big enough to climb the tallest trees," Clementine said. "You're strong enough to carry your little sister when she's tired. And you're brave enough to be friends with a goldfish when other bears only want to eat us. That's the biggest kind of strength there is."
Barnaby looked at his paws. He had carried his sister yesterday. He had climbed Old Pine Tree last week. And here he was, talking to his best friend.
"The magic spinach wasn't for making you bigger," Clementine explained. "The special vitamin was for helping you see how big you already were — on the inside."
Barnaby smiled, and for the first time, he felt bigger than any bear in the forest.
"Thank you, Clementine," he said. "That was the best wish I never made."
And from that day on, Barnaby the bear and Clementine the goldfish were the best of friends, reminding every creature in the forest that true strength comes in all sizes.
