The Bear and the Golden Riddle
Barnaby was a small bear with very big dreams. Every day, he would wander through the Whispering Woods, hoping to find something magical.
One sunny afternoon, he discovered a shimmering pool hidden behind a curtain of ivy. The water sparkled like liquid diamonds, and floating in the center was the most beautiful goldfish he had ever seen. Her scales were orange and gold, glinting in the sunlight.
"Hello!" called Barnaby. "I'm Barnaby!"
"I'm Glimmer," the goldfish replied, splashing happily. "Would you like to swim with me?"
But before Barnaby could step into the cool water, WHOOSH! A mysterious creature appeared. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a wise human face.
"I am the Sphinx," the creature announced. "Only those who answer my riddle may swim in this magical pool."
Barnaby's ears trembled. Riddles were hard!
"I have cities, but no houses," the Sphinx said. "I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"
Barnaby scratched his fuzzy head. He looked at Glimmer. The goldfish swam close and whispered, "Think about what you use to find your way through the forest!"
Barnaby's eyes widened. "A MAP!" he shouted. "Maps have cities and mountains marked on them, but they're just drawings!"
The Sphinx smiled and nodded. "You are wise, little bear. And you have a true friend who helped you."
Glimmer splashed joyfully. "That's what friends do!"
"From now on," the Sphinx said, "you may visit this pool whenever you wish. But remember: the real magic isn't in the water. It's in having friends who help you solve life's riddles."
That day, Barnaby learned two wonderful things. First, even the smallest friends can be the biggest help. Second, some pools are magical not because of the water, but because of who you meet there.
Every summer after that, Barnaby and Glimmer swam together in their secret pool, friends forever under the watchful smile of the Sphinx.
