The Bear and the Embarrassment
I was running through the woods behind Alex's house, tears streaming down my face, leaving behind the disaster of a dinner party. I'd had spinach stuck in my teeth for literally twenty minutes - twenty whole minutes of smiling and talking to my crush like a complete idiot. When his mom finally pointed it out, I thought I would die right there at the table.
The October air burned my lungs as I sprinted past trees, my dress (way too fancy for a spaghetti dinner, thanks Mom) catching on branches. I just needed to escape, to disappear, to literally evaporate from existence.
That's when I saw it.
A bear.
A massive black bear emerged from between the pines like it owned the place, which technically it did. My brain short-circuited. I froze. Every teen movie I'd ever watched flashed before my eyes - this was it, this was how I ended.
But then Alex came crashing through the brush behind me, grabbing my arm and pulling me toward his garage. "RUN!" he yelled, and somehow we were both sprinting, laughing hysterically because what even was this night?
We collapsed against the garage door, hearts pounding. He looked at me - lipstick smudged, hair wild, probably still smelling faintly of garlic bread - and started laughing. Not mean laughing. Real laughing.
"Your face," he said, grinning. "You looked like you were about to fight that bear."
"I WAS going to fight that bear," I declared, which only made him laugh harder. "Anything would be better than going back in there."
He nodded toward the house. "Yeah, that was pretty brutal. But hey, my sister has a goldfish in her room if you need to hide somewhere less bear-filled."
I blinked. "A goldfish?"
"His name is Mr. Glitters. He's a very good listener."
Something about the randomness of it, the way he was trying to make me feel better, made me start laughing too. Maybe tonight wasn't a total disaster. Maybe having spinach in your teeth and almost getting eaten by a bear was just... what growing up felt like sometimes.
Messy. Embarrassing. Completely ridiculous.
But real.
